Gearing up for MECA 2013

Well, looks like I will be busy at MECA this year.  For those of you who do not know what MECA is, it is the Mississippi Educational Computer Association.  It is a technology based conference for educators in Mississippi.  This year, looks like I will be doing three hands on session, and possibly a couple of concurrent sessions as well.   Here is my tentative session breakout.  Of course, as always, I should be around the conference if you just want to visit and have any user specific questions.

So here is my hands on list.  I will post times as soon as I have them.

Hands on session 1

How to Create an SMS Text Messaging System for Your School Using Cel.ly

Presenter:  Craig Jackson, New Media Specialist – Research and Curriculum Unit

In this session, you will learn how to create a FREE SMS text messaging system for your school that will help you inform parents and students about classes, field trips, exam schedules, and much more.  Don’t worry about unwanted contact from students or parents, as the system can be set up as an outgoing system only.  Safeguards?  Of course!  Your text alert system can only be accessed by you, either via the online user interface or your Twitter account with a specific hashtag.  You will need a Twitter account in order to maximize the potential for this application.  Come join us and get started today!

This session is designed for anyone from beginners to experts.

Hands on session 2

How to Build a Social Media Network using Twitter, Cel.ly, Paper.li and WordPress

Presenter:  Craig Jackson, New Media Specialist- Research and Curriculum Unit

In this session, we will help you set up a network designed to help you receive and distribute current and time sensitive information through a variety of social media outlets.  Beginning with Twitter, you will learn how to create your own daily, twice daily, or weekly newsletter derived from Tweets and RSS feeds, and Youtube feeds. You will also learn how to integrate Twitter feeds with Cel.ly to generate text messages, and how to incorporate everything into a WordPress blog site.

This session is designed for anyone from beginners to experts.

Hands on session 3

How to Build an App using AppsBar

Presenter:  Craig Jackson, New Media Specialist- Research and Curriculum Unit

In this session, you will create an HTML 5 app for use on smartphones and tablets.  The app can be used to disseminate information about your class or school.  It is freely distributable for Android and/or iPhones.  You will create an app that will include contact info, social media, pdf documents, and multimedia.

This session is designed for anyone from beginners to experts.

If you wish to include images in the app, have them on a jump drive or online at a location like Flickr, Picasa Web, or similar site
