Verizon bought out Yahoo last month, and as of Friday August 5, Yahoo has shut down it Yahoo Messenger platform.  Maybe it will still work for a while, maybe it won’t.  We shall see.  But there are a multitude of alternative messenger platforms out there that do as much or more than Yahoo Messenger, and they are all free.  My personal favorite is Viber, because you can call or do text chat, as well as send files and do group chats, all for free.  Skype and Google Hangouts are good as well.
